Jonathan Matthews

Group Chief Executive Officer

Jonathan co-founded the Eaton Gate group having previously been COO at Pioneer Underwriters. He qualified as a chartered accountant with PwC and has held senior positions at Beazley Group, Liberty Syndicates and Ryan Speciality Group. Jonathan is a member of the Chartered Insurance Institute.

Paul Hanwell

Chief Underwriting Officer

Paul joined Eaton Gate in November 2024. He brings over 25 years of experience in both Commercial and Personal Lines insurance, having held senior positions within NIG, Direct Line Group, Chubb and Royal & Sun Alliance. This includes specific expertise in business strategy, building market credibility, driving profitable growth and the development of robust controls; all underpinned by a high performance team culture.

Joe Hoffmann

Chief Financial Officer

Joe has over 20 years’ experience in senior finance positions within the insurance industry. Previous roles include Global Controller and Head of M&A at Ryan Specialty, Assistant Global and EMEA Controller at Aon, and Audit Manager at KPMG. He is a Certified Public Accountant and Juris Doctorate

Matt Gifford

Head of Underwriting

Matt has 28 years’ experience in the insurance industry with the formative years of his career being spent underwriting Commercial Lines on behalf of a number of composite insurers. Over the last 10 years however, he has undertaken a number of senior underwriting and operational roles within the MGA environment, both as a coverholder and as a delegating Insurer, and across a diverse range of product lines.

Ben Gilman

Actuarial and Risk Director

Ben has 20 years’ actuarial experience across a range of commercial, retail and specialty insurance and reinsurance products in company, broker and consultancy environments. Ben is experienced with reserving, pricing, capital, exposure management, and risk, having held a variety of roles including Chief Actuary in various Lloyd’s businesses, Senior Manager in consultancies and Head of Analytics at a major broker. He provides analytical input to the business and to insurer partners and brokers to assess performance and drive improvements to rating, underwriting and portfolio composition.

Gareth Hughes

Director of Broker Distribution

Gareth is a driven and connected leader of trading teams having 30 years of experience in the industry. Having worked for Aviva and then AXA for most of his career he has a deep understanding of the B2B Commercial and Personal Insurance markets, and the importance of developing great relationships with insurance brokers. He knows how to lead/motivate sales and underwriting teams to maximise trading opportunities. Gareth has led and contributed to several change management programs throughout his career and brings experience of how to build effective trading teams.

Russell Caston

Head of Claims

Russell has over 30 years of insurance industry experience with expertise across Property & Casualty, Marine, Agriculture, and Motor Fleet sectors. As the UK Head of Claims at MS Amlin Marine and MS Amlin Insurance Europe, he led high-performing claims teams and oversees large and complex losses, ensuring service excellence.

Ryan Hallet

Head of IT

Ryan has over 25 years’ experience in IT and development roles within the insurance industry, including Eurobase International, Towergate and QBE.

Graham Rivers-Moore

Head of Legal & Compliance

Graham has over 20 years’ experience of legal, corporate governance and regulatory affairs within global organisations. Prior to joining Eaton Gate, he was Head of Group Legal for Covéa Insurance following its acquisition of Sterling Insurance which he joined in 2012 as Head of Legal and Compliance. Graham has worked in senior leadership roles with overall responsibility for setting the strategy, staffing and delivery of legal, compliance and company secretarial support. He has successfully managed and overseen legal and compliance teams across international firms operating in regulated industries, including Aegon, Genworth Financial, GE Insurance and Equitas. Graham is a dual qualified lawyer having practised initially in South Africa at leading firm, Webber Wentzel Bowens.

Tyron Moses

Director of Business & Finance Operations

Tyron has over 12 years’ experience in the insurance industry. Having started his career in audit from 2004 to 2008. He has held senior finance roles at Island Heritage Insurance in the Cayman Islands from 2008 to 2015 and prior to departing was the senior vice president of finance and more recently was working in the technical and US GAAP financial reporting team at Navigators Insurance in the UK before joining Eaton Gate. He holds a honours degree in accounting and is a member of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants.

Alastair Speare-Cole

Independent Non-Executive Director

Alastair joined Eaton Gate in October 2017 to take up the position of Independent Non-Executive Director. He has more than 30 years of experience in reinsurance across all lines of business. Alastair was Chief Underwriting Officer for Qatar Reinsurance Company Limited and prior to that he served as a Co-Chief Executive Officer of JLT Towers Re Limited. Initially, he started his career as a graduate trainee at Jardine Matheson after graduating from University of Oxford in Geology and Geophysics. In addition, he is a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute, a Chartered Insurance Professional and a Fellow of the Geological Society in the UK.

Ian Clark

Independent Non-Executive Director

Ian has over 40 years’ experience of working in the financial services industry – including extensive executive experience, most notably as an equity partner at Deloitte where he led the strategy and corporate finance practice for the insurance sector. Prior to that, he was a partner at Bacon & Woodrow. Ian also has significant experience as a Non-Executive Director of regulated companies. Ian has a strong knowledge of the risks faced by the general insurance sector and of the regulatory regime in which it operates, as well as the wider UK regulatory environment. Chairman of Aviva GI business.

Yvonne Chu

Independent Non-Executive Director on Gibraltar Regulated Entities

Yvonne is an experienced financial services lawyer, having been in practice for over 30 years. She has led on mergers and acquisitions transactions involving insurance companies and advises on licensing, regulatory and legal requirements of these companies and other regulated sectors of financial services in Gibraltar. Yvonne is also one of the early pioneers of the experienced investor funds, having advised on the establishment of various experienced investors funds.
